SA2015 & M2015 Helmets: NHRA’s 2027 Expiration Date

A helmet warning is getting shared with a broad claim that SA2015 and M2015 helmets will be rejected at every track in the country on January 1, 2027. The date is supported in NHRA’s current rule material, but the nationwide claim goes too far: sanctioning bodies, classes, and individual events can have different requirements.

What NHRA’s 2026 rules say

NHRA’s 2026 rulebook lists the Snell 2015 helmet certification expiration date as January 1, 2027. The 2026 Junior Dragster Racing League rulebook also lists several accepted helmet standards and points racers to the NHRA expiration dates. Requirements depend on the class and the exact certification label, so read the rulebook for your event rather than relying on a social graphic.

NHRA’s rulebook is the source for NHRA competition. It does not establish a single deadline for every drag strip or racing organization in the United States.

What Junior Dragster families should check

  • Read the label inside the helmet. Record the exact Snell, SFI, or FIA standard printed on it. Do not identify a helmet by its model name or appearance alone.
  • Check the current rulebook and amendments. Confirm the helmet standard for the driver’s class and the specific event. A series may publish updates after a rulebook is released.
  • Ask the event’s tech staff. If the label lists more than one certification, or you are unsure how a date applies, send the exact label information to the track or series before race day.
  • Plan before the next season. If the applicable rules phase out the helmet you have, allow time to confirm the replacement’s exact rating and fit before ordering.

For NHRA references, see the 2026 NHRA Rulebook, the 2026 JDRL Rulebook, and NHRA’s notice, “Snell 2015 Helmet Certifications Expire January 1, 2027.” Check the current rulebook and amendments again before each event.
